Chincoteague Pony Foals (1 - 10) For Sale With Info
Hi, folks! You know I'm crazy about Chincoteague, and I'm wild about our foals that are sold by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, who own the ponies that run free on the Virginia end of Assateague Island. Since the pandemic restrictions were raised only recently, the annual Auction of the ponies will take place on-line, as it did last year. At the moment, next year's Pony Penning, Swim, and Auction will take place as usual, the week of July 23 through 30.
I'll be posting the foals that will be auctioned in groups of 10 - our 69th and 70th foals were born yesterday, 23 June. Usually 8 to 10 foals are designated as "Buy Backs" each year. A "Buy Back" foal is one with outstanding conformation, needed bloodlines, and, occasionally, unusual or beautiful markings. The CVFC Pony Committee decides which of the foals will be "Buy Backs." A "Buy Back" foal is one that you purchase, but you do not take home, or remove from the island. You essentially give it back to the CVFC for breeding purposes. You get to name it, but it stays wild, and under the care of the CVFC. Otherwise, if you purchase a pony, you must take it home, or have it trailered away for training, before arriving on your doorstep, on the Saturday after the sale. There are a few exceptions - those are very young foals, whom the veterinarian deems too young to be separated from the mare - they will be available for pick up at the Fall Round-Up in October.
All of the photos I will be posting were taken by, and are the property of, DSC Photography. They make their living from selling photos of the ponies. They have a marvelous website, where you can look at and purchase a huge variety of photos of the ponies. You can visit their website at: https://dscphotography.net/ If you purchase their photos, their copyright info is not on the photo.
Here are foals 1 through 10 - with birth number, date of birth, color and sex, and the name of the dam first with the sire named second (because we don't have that many stallions compared to the mares)... Ponies with an asterisk (*) before their names are direct descendants of Misty of Chincoteague. I try to post views of both sides, and occasionally the face, or rump, of each foal:
