On 3 April, the 4-year-old mare named Moonshadow - she was born on 21 August 2017 during a lunar eclipse - gave birth to a chestnut filly with a blaze on the Maryland end of Assateague. On, or very near 5 July, both the mare and foal were struck by a car, probably on Bayberry Road. The mare was found dead the morning of July 7, on the beach, with her filly nuzzling her body. On July 12, it was decided that the filly, who would have continued nursing for at least another 3 months, would be transferred from the National Park Service in Maryland (where the ponies are designated as wildlife and receive no vet care) to the CVFC herd in Virginia, where she would receive veterinary care and supplemental feed as an orphaned foal.
The pony fans in Maryland have been calling the filly "Moonbeam." She had a 50% chance of survival without her dam in Maryland; she has a 90 to 100% chance of survival in Virginia. She is currently being tended to at the Carnival Grounds on south Main Street on Chincoteague. There, she has the company of a colt and his older mother. They are playing together and she is eating well. She will not be sold and will be incorporated into the regular herds on the CNWR. She will grow up with the 10 fillies pictured above, who are her age.
