Future Stars Friday - The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Races
A few years back, when the Breeders' Cup decided to run all of the Juvenile races on Friday (instead of all the female races), they came up with the name "Future Stars Friday," since the two-year-olds running are supposed to be the "Stars of Tomorrow." Some of the juveniles will have their best races this year, and as they mature will not be as superb as they were in 2021; others will continue to excel, and will, indeed, become stars of thoroughbred racing in the next handful of years. No one can tell what the future will bring.
This year's Breeders' Cup is at Del Mar, the track that Bing Crosby and other rich racing fans built and opened in 1937 in California. Trevor Denman is the usual track announcer at Del Mar, but he slipped on the stairs of his deck and badly injured his back. Larry Collmus, who calls the races for NBC for the Triple Crown, and the Breeders' Cup, will cover for Trevor for the entire season at Del Mar.
As usual, when I list these races, I will be listing (a) the post position, (b) the name of the entry, (c) the morning line betting odds, (d) the sire's name, and (e) the dam's name. I will also be making my usual odd, personal commentaries for each group of entries in each race.
The first race is the Juvenile Turf Sprint - a field of 12 is allowed, and there are two horses on the waiting list (in case of scratches). The fillies carry 119 pounds, while the boys carry 122 pounds. There are 5 fillies entered (plus one on the wait list); they are: Averly Jane, Derrynane, Kaufymaker, Twilight Gleaming, and Vertiginous (Thunder Love on the wait list). Of the boys, two are geldings: One Timer and Time to Party. Of the current twelve selected to run, one colt was bred in Great Britain; two, a filly and a colt, were bred in New York; four were bred in Kentucky, two fillies and the two geldings; and five were bred in Ireland, two fillies and three colts. Three are chestnuts (a colt, a filly, and a gelding), and the rest are bays or dark browns. Each of the 12 entries have a different sire.
