Three Scratches In Two Breeders' Cup Races - The Juvenile and the Turf

 The early betting favorite in today's Breeder's Cup Juvenile, Jack Christopher, has been scratched due to a skin problem.  There were no colts on a "wait list" for this race, so there there will be 10 entries.
   In tomorrow's $4 million guaranteed Breeders' Cup Turf, two horses are out due to leg problems - both Domestic Spending and United have been scratched.  That means that Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) and Channel Maker are in race (from the "wait list").  The two scratches were in posts 2 and 3; so everyone beginning with post 4 will shift two spaces to the left; Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) will break from gate 13, Channel Maker from gate 14.
   Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) is a 3-year-old bay or dark brown colt, sired by Galileo (IRE) and out of Alta Anna (FR); he will carry 122 pounds in the 1 1/2 mile race.
   Channel Maker is a 7-year-old chestnut gelding, who was bred in Ontario, Canada.  Sired by English Channel, and out of In Return, he will carry 126 pounds.

     Today is my 65th birthday - and it's been a wild ride so far.  I'm old fashioned, and will continue to use two spaces after a period and colon.  I was born in the rear seat of a car on the way to a Navy hospital in Virginia, and my family lived in Virginia, Tennessee and Texas by the time I was five years old.  Dad retired from the Navy after 22 years of service on my fifth birthday.  We were stationed at the Kingsville Naval Air Station in Texas, and we moved to Gainesville, Florida so Dad could get a degree using the GI Bill, and so he would "never have to shovel snow again."  I spent my school years in Gainesville, and spent the majority of the summers running wild on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in Virginia.  The islands were where my Mom's family had lived since 1697.      When I say I ran wild on the islands, I want to clarify that I never did anything wrong there...  I just had few limitations....

"The Chincoteague Tragedy" - Part 2 - The First Article Shared; And the Permutations Begin...

    Emma Virginia "Jennie" Hill was not quite 13 years and 3 months old when she died after receiving two gunshot wounds on Chincoteague Island on the morning of June 18, 1885.  She was on her way to visit the dressmaker with her mother when a farm hand, 20-year-old Thomas W. Freeman, stopped them both.   He had asked to marry Jennie several times and was denied by her parents with each proffer.  Tom asked Mrs. Hill that morning if she had changed her mind, and she replied, "No."  He pulled a pistol from his pocket, shot Mrs. Hill twice, shot Jennie twice, and, as they ran staggering for aid, he shot himself in the forehead.  Jennie died from her wounds at 11 p.m. that night.  Her mother recovered after 2 weeks of unconsciousness and fever.    Following is the first news article that appeared in newspapers, appearing in the morning edition of The Philadelphia Times  on Saturday, June 20, 1885, on the front page in column 2: ...

The Chincoteague Fire of 1924

    Snow was falling the evening of Monday, February 25, 1924 on Chincoteague, but people were still at work at 9 p.m. at the Whealton Oyster Company.  John T. Mears, who had lost his home in the 1920 fire, was the manger that night, and was helping other employees roll out barrels of oysters by hand, when two of his sons ran in.  The young men breathlessly reported that the Farmers' Manufacturing Company, which made the barrels for their oysters was ablaze - and it was next door to the Whealton Oyster Company.  The flames were spreading quickly, fueled by a steady northeast breeze.  Mears and his fellow employees managed get all of the barrels out of their shucking house just before the roof collapsed.      The fire had spread to the company docks, and the boats there met a fiery fate as well.  The flames engulfed the entire Railroad Dock and all of their buildings.
