2022 Kentucky Oaks Post Positions, Betting Odds, more...

 Friday, 6 May will see the 148th running of the Kentucky Oaks, the premiere 3-year-old filly race of the nation.  This year's edition will feature a full field of 14, and one alternate has also been named.  The Oaks is run on the Churchill Downs track at Louisville, Kentucky, as is the Kentucky Derby, the following day.  This year the guaranteed purse is $1,250,000; the race length is 1 and 1/8 miles (9 furlongs); and the girls will each carry 121 pounds.  The post time is listed as 5:51 EDT, or 3:51 MDT.  
   Beguine is listed as the alternate starter, in case of a scratch due to injury or illness.  All of the fillies, except two, were bred in Kentucky; Venti Valentine was bred in New York, and Desert Dawn was bred in Arizona.  All of the fillies are bay or dark bay, except three chestnuts (including Beguine, the alternate).  And trainer D. Wayne Lukas has an entry in this race, Secret Oath, breaking from post position 1.  If Beguine, the alternate filly runs, Gun Runner will be the only stallion with two offspring in the race.
   Like the colts participating in the Derby, the fillies had to acquire qualifying points to run in the Oaks by running in specific races.

Nine Breeders' Cup Races From Del Mar on Saturday, 2 November 2024

 The horses that participate in the Breeders' Cup races each year are at the top of their games; they have to be nominated, and they have to earn points to qualify to enter such high profile races.  The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) became law after being passed by Congress in 2020.  HISA was created to implement, for the first time, a national, uniform set of integrity and safety rules that are applied consistently to every Thoroughbred racing participant and racetrack facility throughout the United States and it's territories. One Hundred Chincoteague Pony Foals Born in 2025 (So Far) For the CVFC's 100th Annual Pony Penning and Auction!

In 1925, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company began their management of the annual Pony Penning that had been taking place on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands in Virginia for over a hundred years.  Pony Penning was an annual event when the owners of the livestock, running free on both islands, were rounded up and identified.  The stock that the owner did not need in the foreseeable future, was sold off at an agreed upon price, and was usually removed from the islands.  It had been a well-known event for many years, with people gathering from the Carolinas, Virginia, Washington D. C., Delmarva, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.    When the CVFC began managing Pony Penning, they got county and state permission for a Carnival, set up games and different types of races (boating, swimming and horse and pony), as well as having the Pony Sale.  And the CVFC advertised the Carnival and Pony Penning events in newspapers.  It became a big event ....
