Ancestor Information About the Ponies Currently Living on the Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland

Maryland Assateague Pony Ancestors

This information was extrapolated from the Chincoteague Pony Pedigree Database; any errors are mine. Amanda Geci took all of the information available from both the National Park Service at the Assateague Island National Seashore, and from the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company (who own the ponies in Virginia that live on Assateague Island within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge) regarding the bloodlines and pedigrees of all the ponies who live on Assateague Island and produced this database. The Chincoteague Pony Pedigree Database is accessible on the internet at: http://chincoteaguepedigrees.com/pedigree/pedigree.pedigree.php If you visit this page, there are several options on the second line – the last one is “Assateague Herds.” If you open this selection, it immediately goes to the Virginia Herd Members page; above this naming line is a menu selection with “State”, “Sort by:”, and submit boxes. Click on the drop-down menu arrow beside Virginia, and choose Maryland. Then you can choose to look at the Maryland ponies by age, sex, color, or alphabetized names. This will show you the known pedigree of any pony on the island.

   Seventy-seven ponies (76, with the loss of Delegate’s Pride – aka Chip) that are descended from only 19 known ancestors – 6 stallions and 13 mares. These are from the records of the National Park Service on Assateague Island in Maryland. 

   Dr. Keiper found 44 ponies living in three herds in 1975; the herds were labeled as M, N, and T. The ponies labeled M1, N1, and T1 were the herd stallions, and additional members of eachherd got an alpha-numeric identity. Following the ponies offspring faltered in the 1980s. In 1990, after studying 25 “unidentified” ponies, and matching 20 to previous herd members, five X-numeric members were added to the identification list. One T stallion (was he T1, or a later number? - we do not know) was given the designation K1, I assume to go with the name of Khartoum…

   So the 76 ponies on the island descend from 7 ponies in the 1975 M herd (2 stallions and 5 mares); from 6 ponies from the 1975 N herd (1 stallion and 6 mares); from 4 ponies in the T herd (1 stallion labeled K1, and 3 mares); and from 2 X ponies from the1990 herd census, a chestnut mare and stallion – only 19 individuals.

   The pedigrees of the ponies are very patchy – for the older generation, we have only 2 or 3 known ancestors. For instance, Rosie, aged 28, has two ancestors in her pedigree: M6 (twice) and N6; Ninka, aged 27, has three ancestors: N1, N6, and N10; Sapphire, aged 17, also has three ancestors: K1 (twice), N2, and T3. With the few bloodlines available on the island, Korona K, born in April 2021, has the following ancestors: K1 (four times), M17 (three times), N1 (twice), N2 (three times), N4 (twice), N6, N9 (twice), T5 (four times), and X16.

   The following pages consist of two types of lists – the first lists the 19 ancestors by their Keiper numbers, with an associated name (if any), and a coat color (if known), plus the sex of the pony, followed by a list of descendants living on the Maryland end of Assateague (including Delegate’s Pride, aka Chip – since he has descendants currently on the island); the second list is an alphabetical listing of the ponies currently there, followed by the Keiper system listing of their known ancestors. If the listing states “x2” or an x followed by another number, that reads as “times 2” or times whatever number. It indicates how many times that individual appears in that single pony’s pedigree.

   *77 ponies (76 with the removal of Delegate’s Pride): 30/29 males and 47 females.*

   Removing Chip from the stallions – 29 males; 11 of the 28 are 3 years old or younger; 18 are adults. Of those 18 stallions, ages 4 and up, only 9 are identified as having ever sired foals: Assateague Lightning (1), Assateague’s Phoenix (1), Bayberry (1), Bodacious Bob (2),

Chestnut (3), General Harker (5), Joy (5 – counting Moonbeam), Mr. Frisky Hooves (4), and Yankee (7).

   Of the 47 females, 5 are aged 3 or less, leaving 42 adult mares. Twelve of those 42 mares are aged 25 or older. That leaves 30 mares that would be considered “breeders.” However, since 2015, only 12 of those 30 mares have foaled. Alexandria’s Angel foaled in 2021. Giggles has had 2 foals, the last in 2018.  Gokey Go-Go Bones is now 20; she produced 4 foals since 2015, with the last born in 2020. Harmony is 14, and had her last foal in 2017. Johnny’s Star has had 3 foals, with the last one in 2021. Jojo has foaled 3 times since 2015, with the last in 2020. Josie Rue had her first foal this year, 2022. Linda Rae’s Autumn Glory has had 2 foals in the last 2 years. Mieke’s Noe’lani had had 2 foals, with the last in 2021. Ms. Macky, 9 this year, has had 2 foals, with the last in 2019. Shasta has had 3 foals, with the last in 2021; and Susi Solé, who has had 4 foals, the last on 7 May of this year.
