Secret Oath Takes 5th Kentucky Oaks Victory For Trainer D. Wayne Lukas

The last time trainer D. Wayne Lukas won the Kentucky Oaks was 32 years ago.  He won in grand fashion today, bringing back memories of huge wins in hundreds of Stakes races.  D. Wayne Lukas is now 86 years old, and some people think this year may be his final hurrah in big stakes racing.  But his lightly raced chestnut filly, Secret Oath, a home-bred from family owned and operated Briland Farms, returned the Lukas family to the winners circle, along with the owners and breeders, Rob and Stacy Mitchell.

It was an open secret that Echo Zulu, the favorite, was going to the front and try to lead the way all around the track.  But Yuugiri's trainer believed his filly could meet and break Echo Zulu and win on the front end, too.  Those two fillies ran a sizzling first quarter and half-mile and then started backing up.  Secret Oath was 5-wide on the final turn, powered her way to the lead - and stayed there.
Secret Oath won the 2022 Kentucky Oaks by 2 lengths, in a time of 1:49.44, and took home the winner's share of the purse - $705,250.  Nest was the betting favorite as the starting gates opened, and she ran along the rail, tucked nicely behind the two leaders who were knocking themselves out; she finally maneuvered between the fading runners, finishing a half-length  ahead of Desert Dawn.  Nest's paycheck was $227,500.  The Arizona-bred Desert Dawn left the gate at odds of 47 to 1; she crossed the finish line in third place, a half-length in front of Echo Zulu, who had run herself ragged for the entire race.  Desert Dawn's purse portion was $113,750.  Following are the rest of the field in order of finish, with their purse earnings:  Echo Zulu, fourth, $56,875; Kathleen O, fifth, $34,125;  the rest of the field each earned $12,500 - 6th, Shahama; 7th, Turnerloose; 8th, Cocktail Moments; 9th, Candy Raid; 10th, Nostalgic; 11th, Goddess of Fire; 12th, Hidden Connection; 13th, Yuugiri; 14th, Venti Valentine.

There were 100,188 people in attendance for the 148th Kentucky Oaks; even though it had rained, the main track was described as "Good."  I always list payouts for a $2 bet...  So, a $2 Win bet on Secret Oath paid $10.80; a Place bet on Nest paid $4.20; and a Show bet on Desert Dawn paid $15.40.  A $2 Exacta bet paid $39.40; a Trifecta bet paid $616.80; and a Superfecta bet paid $3,238.40.
I hope you won something if you wagered today - and I wish you luck in betting on tomorrow's Kentucky Derby!
