Mo Donegal Wins Belmont Stakes By 3 Lengths

When the starting gate opened, Mo Donegal, the bay three-year-old son of Uncle Mo never looked back.  He just kept on running, and running, and running.  He left the gate as the betting favorite, and he proved the crowd at Belmont Park correct.  We The People  and Skippylongstocking hooked up at the start and ran each other out of the race.  Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike was running last for the first mile, and he never really fired.  His trainer had decided to keep him off the rail for the entire race, and Ritchie spent the entire race trying to go to the rail, and fighting his jockey.
In the stretch, with We The People and Skippylongstocking still dueling, Mo Donegal rolled past them with one furlong to run; then stablemate Nest, the filly, rolled past the two former leaders as well.  The spaces between the finishers was amazing, other than the 3 lengths that Mo Donegal won by.  And each horse took home a paycheck from the $1.5 million purse in the mile and a half race.
I'll list the order of finish and how many lengths they were in front of their closest rival, with their race earnings following.  Mo Donegal won by 3 lengths and earned $800,000; Nest by 6 1/4 lengths, $280,000; third was Skippylongstocking by 7 lengths, $150,000; We The People by 12 lengths, $100,000; Creative Minister by 13 3/4 lengths, $60,000; Rich Strike was sixth, $45,000; Barber Road was seventh, $35,000; and Golden Glider finished eighth, earning $30,000.

If you bet $2 to win on Mo Donegal, you got $7.20 back as your payout; Nest to place paid $5.30; Skippylongstocking to show paid $5.60.  A $2 Exacta paid $27.60; a Trifecta paid $375; and a Superfecta paid $1,384.
I hope you had a great day watching the race, and that you, hopefully, made some money on your bets!
