The Foals of the CFVC Chincoteague Ponies For Sale at Auction on 28 July 2022
**** Pony Swim Update - King Neptune this year is foal #28 ****
The annual auction of the Chincoteague Pony foals at Chincoteague Island's Pony Penning will take place on Thursday, 28 July 2022. The place is the Auction area between the pony pens and the regular Carnival Grounds located on Main Street on Chincoteague Island, Virginia. The auction is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. EDT (6 a.m. MDT) sharp. At the moment, 67 foals have been born to the herds roaming the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge on the Virginia end of Assateague Island National Seashore. We lost one foal this year, so there are 66 of them in the corrals. If any foals are born between the original posting of this blog, and the morning of the Auction, they will be added to the listing.
The first foal born this year arrived on 26 February; at this time, the last foal born was on 11 July. All foals born before the auction will be sold at the auction. However, younger foals who are not old enough to be weaned (and this is determined by the licensed veterinarians on-call for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company ponies 24 hours a day, every day of the year) will have an assigned "pick-up date" later in the year. If you purchase a foal to take home, you must have it removed from the Carnival Grounds by the date and time specified by the CVFC. All transportation must be approved - no longer can you take a foal home in the back of your station wagon or van, as was done many years ago. Any foals born after the auction will be sold at auction on an announced and advertised date later in the year, with a veterinarian-advised "pick-up date."
Also remember that the first foal to reach the shore of Chincoteague during/after the swim is designated King or Queen Neptune and is raffled off at the Carnival Grounds Wednesday night. You must be present to win this foal. So one foal will be missing from the 67 listed (I can't see into the future and say who will be the strongest swimmer that day - sorry). Unless the winner of the raffle donates that foal (King or Queen Neptune) back to the CVFC to auction off, there will be 65, not 66, foals up for auction.
There are 10 designated "Buy-Back" foals this year. All are fillies. They were chosen by the CVFC Pony Committee for their bloodlines, conformation, and coat colors. They will be "replacement" broodmares for older mares, as they are retired or pass away. Buy-Back foals remain on the islands for their life-time. As there are only a few chosen each year, their prices are generally higher than the foals that are taken home. The person, or group, who purchases a Buy-Back gets to name the pony, and have their photo taken with it. Then the pony returns to the wild for the rest of it's life - other than the 2 and a half days they spend on the Carnival Grounds on Chincoteague each July. To insure the Buy-Backs have a good start in life, when the Fall Round-Up occurs, the Buy-Back fillies will be captured and trailered back to the Carnival Grounds, where they will get hay and grain (and be watched over by many people) until the Spring Round-Up, when they will be trailered back to Assateague and turned loose until next year's Pony Penning in July.
The Pony Auctions used to be in person only. The COVID-19 Pandemic changed that. The last two auctions were held on-line. This year, the bids taken will be both in person and online. (In years past, there was no reserved seating for the auction; you arrived early and brought your chair, or sat in the one set of grandstand seats that was available. Sometime between 1996 and 2015, it became normal for people to place their chairs in rows "holding" their places for the auction a week or so before the actual auction, chaining them in place. - This is an action that I deplore, because some visitors come just for the auction, and even though they arrive early on Thursday, they can't get a seat where they can view the foals for sale, even though they intend to buy one. I still feel that it should be "first come, first sit" on the morning of the auction...) Anyway, this year, there will be some fencing replacement, and you cannot place your chairs at the auction area until sometime Wednesday afternoon or evening - this is per the CVFC, on their Facebook page. If you wish to buy a pony on-line, without being at the auction, whether a take-home pony, or a Buy-Back, you can do so by registering to bid at the following link: https://liveauctions.tv/auction/1815/detail Remember, however, that if you purchase a foal on-line, you must also provide transport for that foal to your home prior to the time designated by the CVFC. If you attend the auction and are planning to buy a foal, the CVFC accepts cash, MasterCard and Visa only. No checks are accepted, no other credit cards other than those listed. Cash, MasterCard or Visa.
There will also be 11 other lots up for auction - these include crocheted items, paintings, photographs, a few miscellaneous items, and the English saddle, a Steuben, that was Maureen Beebe's personal saddle. These items are described and can be viewed at the auction website listed above. These items - that are not ponies - have letters as their "Lot" identifications, and are listed below the ponies.
Below, I will post photos of each foal. Some photos may not be recent, as that foal's herd may be in a hard-to-reach area for either hikers or boaters. Some photos may be up to 6 or 8 weeks old, and the foals will have grown a huge amount in that time. Some will have sun-burned coats, and look lighter than when they were born; some will be shedding their baby coats and look ragged, or seem to have mismatched colors on their faces and/or legs, etc. Some will have sleek coats, and other will be furry and curly. It's all a part of their growing up. Some of them are muddy from lying down in wet areas, some have black mud/mire on their hooves and/or up to their knees from being on the marsh. For each foal I will post the number they will be at auction, which the order in which they were first seen. I have listed their birth date as the date on which they were first seen, and they were probably born late the night before, or early on the morning of that date. Six of the foals have either partial or whole blue eyes (or a single eye) - this is noted. Ponies that are descendants of Misty (of Chincoteague) will be noted. Their coat color, and names of sire and dam will be listed. The 10 Buy-Backs will be noted.
Almost every photo I use in this listing was taken by, and is the copyrighted property of, DSC Photography. If I use the photo someone other than DSC Photography took, it is so noted. All of the photographs I use are the copyrighted property of other photographers (since I no longer live near the islands). These photographers make their living from the sales of their photographs - which, should you visit their websites, are available at a low cost and without their watermarks on the photos. Please honor their copyrights.
