Breeders Cup World Championship Races of 2022 Are Fast Approaching
This year's Breeders Cup venue is at Keeneland Race Course, at 4201 Versailles Road, Lexington, Kentucky. This is he third time that Keeneland has hosted the Breeders Cup World Championship races: the first year was 2015, when American Pharoah the Triple Crown winner won the final race of the day, the Classic by 6 1/2 lengths; 2020 saw the Breeders Cup races being run without an audience - other than on television and track workers who were doing their jobs - due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Keeneland opened for racing in 1936. The main dirt course is 1 and 1/16 miles; the turf course is 7 1/2 fulongs (15/16ths of a mile).
This year is the 39th gathering for the Breeders Cup races. There will be 5 Juvenile races on Friday, November 4th, and 9 races on Saturday, 5 November. The fourteen races have guaranteed purses worth $29 million. The USA Network and Fanduel Sports will televise the Breeders Cup races on Friday, and the first 6 races on Saturday. NBC will pick up coverage of the last 3 races, the Distaff, Turf and Classic, which will pay out $12 million in purse money.
Keeneland course configuration for the Breeders Cup races.
I will write about each race over the next two days - once the post positions have been drawn Monday afternoon (31 October). Two of the juvenile contenders are entered into 2 races; we'll have to see which race the trainers and owners decide to run those two entries in. The two double-entered juvies are Nagirroc and Xigera. Knocksyoursocksoff withdrew from the Juvie Fillies Turf, in which Xigera is also entered, so there might be two other entries running - there are 8 'also eligibles' on the waiting list in that race.
In Saturday's races, two entries in the Filly and Mares Sprint are also qualified and entered in the Sprint.
In the Dirt Mile, one entry is qualified and also entered in the Classic, and 4 entries are also entered in the Sprint.
Three entries in the Fillies and Mares Turf race are entered in other races - one in the Turf Mile, and one in the Turf and one is an 'also eligible' in the Turf.
The Sprint has 6 entries that are entered in other races.
The Turf Mile has one entry also entered Fillies and Mares Turf.
The Distaff has 8 entries - one 5-year-old, three 4-year-olds, and four 3-year-olds.
The Turf has one entry that is also entered in the Filly and Mares Turf, and the one 'also eligible' for the Turf is also entered in the Fillies and Mares Turf.
The Classic is being touted as a match between undefeated 4-year-old Flightline and this year's Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike. There are seven other entries, including Cyberknife, who is also entered in the Dirt Mile.
... It will be interesting to see which double-entered horses run in which race! ...
