Breeders Cup 'Future Stars Friday' Juvenile Races - Just About All the Information You'd Want
This 39th edition of the Breeders Cup World Championship Races take place at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. This is their third time as hosts, the two previous being 2015 (with American Pharoah winning the Classic, after the Triple Crown) and the 2020 edition with only a television audience due to the pandemic.
The Friday, November 4th, races feature the 2-year-olds, or "juveniles," of racing. To enter any Breeders Cup race, the stallion must be nominated and pay a fee for each year's foals, the owners of the foals must pay fees, and then, once they reach racing age, the Thoroughbreds must earn enough points to be eligible to enter their race - proving they are fit and fleet enough to be contenders. Thus, the five races set for Friday are touted as "Future Stars Friday."
The five races consist of a sprint race that both sexes may enter, with the fillies receiving a 3-pound weight concession for running against the boys; and two races each for colts and fillies only, one on the main dirt track, and one on the turf (grass course). The five races have a combined purse total of seven million dollars.
The USA Network and Fanduel Sports will provide coverage of all five races on Friday. I am not certain at what time they will begin their coverage, but the first Breeders Cup race on Friday is scheduled to enter the starting gate at 3 o'clock p.m. EDT (1 p.m. MDT). The fifth, and final, Breeders Cup race on Friday is to enter the starting gate at 5:40 p.m. EDT (3:40 MDT).
I will be listing some information about the field of each race (including coat color, because my husband always bet on coat colors). The information regarding the race entries will have the post position number, the entry's name, (weight assigned), morning line betting odds, sire's name, and dam's name.
The first race is the Juvenile Turf Sprint, which covers 5 1/2 furlongs (11/16th mile), and has a purse of $1 million. The race is restricted to 12 entrants, both fillies and colts, with the girls carrying a weight of 119 pounds, while the boys carry 122 pounds. Five of the 12 entries are fillies, 5 are colts, and 2 are geldings. Three of the fillies and two colts were bred in Ireland, and one filly in Great Britain. One of the geldings, Tyler's Tribe, was bred in Iowa; and one of the colts, Speed Boat Beach, was bred in Florida. The other four entries were bred in Kentucky. Two colts share the same sire, Sharp Azteca. There are two chestnuts in the field of 12 - Lady Hollywood (GB) and Persian Force (IRE). The other ten horses are listed as bay or dark brown. The photos of Speed Boat Beach I have seen make him look black. (There are 3 horses that are also eligible, in case of injury or illness.)
