The 1910 U. S. Census of the Incorporated Town of Chincoteague, Virginia

 This is a "silly" creation of love for what I consider my home town.  My Mom was born and raised there, as was her Mother's Mother's family, going back to 1697.  Chincoteague Island has always been my center and lode-stone.  I look at photos and maps of it (and Assateague) daily and miss it sorely.  I would be living the island life, with sand in my shoes, if it was possible.

1908 Cleaveland Street

   The town of Chincoteague was incorporated in 1908.  The 1910 United States Census is the first one to list the names of the streets and lanes that residents lived on.  The person tasked with the enumeration of 1910 was Edgar H. Bratton, who lived on Church Street.  He began his Census of the town of Chincoteague on April 15th, and finished the town Census on the 27th of April.  He appears to have jumped about a bit, in that he did not list all of Main Street at once, but went down cross-streets and lanes as he met them.  I do not know if house numbers were assigned at the time, or if he just did not list them.

  He lists 16 named streets and/or lanes within the town limits.  Two are very similar - Stevenson and Stephenson Streets.  As there is a break between his listings of them I do not know if it was one street, and he misspelled one version of it, or if they were, indeed, two separate streets.  I have not been able to find any maps of the town of Chincoteague from that time.

  In putting this listing of names and streets together, I am making my own idiosyncratic list markers.  First, I will list the name of the Street or Lane, in bold lettering.  I am also listing the streets and lanes in the order they appear in the Census.  Second, I am going to alphabetize the surnames of the families, to make for easy searching; I am only listing the specific Head of the Household name.  Third, each family in the Census has a family number attached - several live in the same house, at times - and that family Census number will appear in bold numbers at the end of the listing.  Fourth, a single "family unit" in a house may contain a single person; a husband and wife and their children; it may contain in-laws (mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters); it may contain step-children with different surnames; it may contain nieces, nephews, or grandchildren; it may also contain "live-in help," such as a house-keeper (in John A. M. Whealton's case), or other "domestic servants."  The number of family members will be in italicized parentheses (2).

   Please also take note that I am using the spelling used in the 1910 Census.
