Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico 2023

 The Preakness counter-part of the Kentucky Oaks for 3-year-old fillies is the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.  It will take place this Friday, 19 May, at Pimlico Race Course, outside of Baltimore, Maryland.  The Preakness Stakes will be run on Saturday, 20 May.  The Black-Eyed Susan is now a Grade 2 race.  It's run on the main dirt track at Old Hilltop, as is the Preakness.  The race is now a handicap race, where the fillies who are considered "better" by the horsemen at the track carry more weight in the race than the other entries.  This race covers 1 1/8 miles, or 9 furlongs, and the purse is $300,000.  Post time is listed as 5:44 pm EDT  (3:44 MDT).  There are 12 entries, carrying weights of 118, 120, or 124 pounds.  The weight differences are supposed to get all the fillies at the finish line at the same time.
   Of the twelve fillies entered, Pate was bred in Virginia, Miracle was bred in New York, Balpool and Frosty O Toole were bred in Florida, and the other 8 are Kentucky-breds.  There are two horses listed as chestnut (but in the photos I've looked at Pate looks like a bay - maybe it's the lighting?); two are gray/roans; and the other 8 are bays. The 2 gray/roan fillies were both on the "waiting list" for the Kentucky Oaks.  None of the Kentucky Oaks contenders are in this race.  The twelve fillies represent twelve stallions.  Three trainers each have two fillies: Todd Pletcher, Brad Cox and Michael J. Maker.
   The post positions have been drawn - but I am frustrated in that I cannot find any morning line betting odds posted; only Las Vegas odds for the Preakness.....

   At the moment, it seems that Mage, who won the Kentucky Derby, will be the only entry from the Derby in the Preakness... It looks as if there will be 9 entries in the Preakness, with the post position drawing at 5:30 pm EDT tomorrow....  I'll be posting tomorrow night.

All Chincoteague Pony Foals Born So Far in 2024 (93 at the Moment)

 It looks as though the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company will have a bumper crop of foals for its' Pony Auction on Thursday, 25 July.  The people who live on Chincoteague Island do not pay a tax to support their Fire Department and Ambulance Service.  The purchase of fire fighting equipment, fire engines, ambulances, rescue vehicles, all training for both services, and the few paid positions in both services, come through the sales of the Chincoteague Pony foals, the annual Firemen's Carnival in July, fund-raising events and donations.  The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company was established in May of 1924 - 100 years ago this month - after two horrendous fires wiped out downtown areas, and then when a third fire occurred, the previously purchased fire-fighting equipment would not work.  Fourteen men passed a hat around, raised $4.16, and the CVFC was formed.    *** The photos I use in this specific blog are NOT mine.  They are the copyrighted,...

Auction Prices of the Chincoteague Pony Foals on Wednesday, 27 July 2023

 Here are the prices this years' foals brought in at auction on the Carnival Grounds at Chincoteague Island, Virginia.  Foal 70 was Queen Neptune and was raffled off on Wednesday night, after the swim.  Tickets for the raffle were sold at $1 apiece, and all 10,000 ticket chances were sold, so she raised $10,000 for the CVFC.  Seven Buy Backs had been announced - one chosen early and auctioned early to benefit the Museum of Chincoteague Island in their quest to purchase the Beebe Ranch - and near the end of today's auction, an 8th foal was announced as a Buy Back, number 79.     Six other items were donated to the auction for money raising purposes - a large photo by DSC Photography of ponies coming to approaching the corral during a round-up; a "wooden quilt" wall hanging made from fence pieces of the old North corrals; a signed print from Michael Bernstein; a collection of 3 items - a 1985 Pony Penning poster owned by Maureen Beebe, a horseshoe-shaped foot...
