Kentucky Derby 2023 Information

 The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 6th, with a post time of 6:45 pm EDT (or 4:45 MDT).  Twenty of the top 3-year-old Thoroughbred colts from the United States and Japan will compete in the annual 1 1/4 mile (10 furlongs) race on the first Saturday in May.  These colts will each carry 126 pounds while racing on the main dirt track at Churchill Downs outside of Louisville, Kentucky for a purse of $3 million - which will be distributed to only the top 5 finishes.  If you finish in 6th place, or further down, you will not receive a portion of the purse.

   The inclusion in the Kentucky Derby is based on points, earned in specific prep races located around the world.  With today's post position draw, we learned that 2 colts bred in Japan are definitely entered, and a third is on the "stand-by" list, in case any colt is scratched due to illness or injury.  There are 20 entries, with 3 colts on the "stand-by" list.  Of those 23, three were bred in Japan - Derma Sotogake (JPN) and Continuar (JPN) are in the field, with Mandarin Hero (JPN) on "stand-by" status.  Of the other 20 entries, all were bred in Kentucky, with the exception of Angel of Empire, who was bred in Pennsylvania.  Three trainers have 9 of the runners -  Brad Cox trains 4, Todd Pletcher trains 3, and Tim Yakteen trains 2.  Five stallions have two sons running for the roses - Violence, Candy Ride (ARG), Curlin, Good Magic, and Into Mischief has 2 - or 3,  as the first colt on the "stand-by" list was sired by him.  In the regular field of 20, there are 4 gray/roan colts, 5 chestnuts and 11 bays; the "stand-by" colts are 2 bays and 1 gray/roan. - Just 3 other things I'll point out:  Kingsbarns heads into the Kentucky Derby undefeated; Tapit Trice was purchased for $1.3 million when sold by his breeder; and 2 colts will have blinkers on for the Derby - Sun Thunder and Rocket Can.

Nine Breeders' Cup Races From Del Mar on Saturday, 2 November 2024

 The horses that participate in the Breeders' Cup races each year are at the top of their games; they have to be nominated, and they have to earn points to qualify to enter such high profile races.  The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) became law after being passed by Congress in 2020.  HISA was created to implement, for the first time, a national, uniform set of integrity and safety rules that are applied consistently to every Thoroughbred racing participant and racetrack facility throughout the United States and it's territories. One Hundred Chincoteague Pony Foals Born in 2025 (So Far) For the CVFC's 100th Annual Pony Penning and Auction!

In 1925, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company began their management of the annual Pony Penning that had been taking place on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands in Virginia for over a hundred years.  Pony Penning was an annual event when the owners of the livestock, running free on both islands, were rounded up and identified.  The stock that the owner did not need in the foreseeable future, was sold off at an agreed upon price, and was usually removed from the islands.  It had been a well-known event for many years, with people gathering from the Carolinas, Virginia, Washington D. C., Delmarva, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.    When the CVFC began managing Pony Penning, they got county and state permission for a Carnival, set up games and different types of races (boating, swimming and horse and pony), as well as having the Pony Sale.  And the CVFC advertised the Carnival and Pony Penning events in newspapers.  It became a big event ....
