Mage Wins 149th Kentucky Derby

In only the fourth race of his life, Mage, a chestnut son of Good Magic and Puca, won the Kentucky Derby by a full length.  Trained by Venezuelan immigrant Gustavo Delgado, and ridden by Venezuelan immigrant Javier Castellano, The small colt ran the 1 1/4 mile (10 furlongs) race in 2:01.57, in front of a crowd of 150,335.  This was Castellano's 16th mount in a Derby, and Delgado's third runner - and it was the first win for both.  Mage is owned by CMNWLTH (Commonwealth, a consortium of 382 owners) and 3 other investors.
Mage winning the 2023 Kentucky Derby

This running of the Kentucky Derby had a guaranteed purse of $3 million - with only the top five finishers receiving portions of that amount.   In 1973, Secretariat was the only Derby horse stabled in barn 42; this year, Mage was the only Derby horse in barn 42...  Hmmmmm...
As the field of 18 entered the starting gate, Tapit Trice was the betting favorite at 9/2, followed by Angel of Empire, Derma Sotogake (JPN), Two Phil's and Kingsbarns, who was undefeated entering this race.  The first quarter was run in 22.35 seconds; the half in 45.73; three-quarters in 1:10.11 - I didn't catch the mile time, but the last half was covered in 51.46 seconds.
Two Phil's was leading at the top of the stretch, and he hung on gamely, but couldn't withstand the final rush of Mage, placing second, a length behind Mage.  Angel of Empire had moved at the top of the stretch, but couldn't catch Two Phil's, finish 1 1/2 lengths behind him in third; Disarm finished fourth, another 4 1/2 lengths behind Angel of Empire.
