Also, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission decided that all horses trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. would be scratched - this means that Lord Miles, who had earned 105 points for the Derby, was also scratched. The bay son of Curlin and Lady Esme had drawn post position 19 on Monday. Japan-bred Mandarin Hero (JPN) will fill in to make a field of 20.
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. had two of his horses, both owned by Kenneth Ramsey, die after races at Churchill Downs since opening day. He stated that having two horses die was "mind boggling." Parent's Pride, a 4-year-old filly, was pulled up in the stretch on opening night in race 8, on April 29th. She collapsed on the track and died. On Tuesday, May 2nd, Chasing Arties, a 5-year-old gelding, finished his race out of the money, after being bumped twice in the stretch. He was vanned off the track, and later died under a veterinarian's care. On March 15, Joseph was fined and blocked from racing in Pennsylvania, after his winning filly's urine tested positive for Gabapentin. She was disqualified, and Joseph claims the sample was contaminated.
