Chincoteague Pony Foals For Sale at the 2023 Pony Penning on 27 July
**** UPDATED Wednesday, 26 July ****
It's time once again for me to post photos of the foals that will be auctioned off to the highest auction bidder, either in person or on-line, on Thursday, 27 July 2023, by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company of Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
To date, 79 foals have been born; unfortunately, 6 have passed away in the wild due to unforeseen circumstances impossible to control. - The ponies do live in the wild, and if anyone sees one in trouble, help is summoned immediately. But nature is beyond control. - One foal has already been auctioned off for a charitable cause; more about that later. If more foals are born between now and the day of the Pony Auction, I will add them to the following list.
I mainly use photographs taken by DSC Photography, owned and operated by Darcy and Steve Cole; the photos I use are copyrighted by the people/company who took them. I use the photos only to let you see the appearance of the ponies. If I use a photo taken by someone other than DSC Photography, it is noted under that photo. Please do not share these photos. The owners of the photos make their living from their photography work. (Thank you.)
We have sixteen stallions who have sired foals this year. What the stallions are commonly called is in bold type. The sires this year, listed eldest to youngest are:
Ace's Black Tie Affair (Ace), age 16; sire: Centaur (possibly Charcoal); dam: Susie Q
Ajax, age 16; sire: Spirit of Assateague; dam: Foxy Asset
Effie's Papa Bear (Hoppy), age 16; sire: Sockett To Me; dam: Mermaid
Tornado's Legacy, age 16; sire: Tornado; dam: Unci
Tornado's Prince of Tides, age 16; sire: Tornado; dam: Sand Cherry
Archer's Gambit (Puzzle), age 15; sire: North Star; dam: Lily Pad
Chief Golden Eagle, age 15; sire: Glacier; dam: Beautiful Dreamer
Ken, age 15; sire: Wild Thing; dam: Star Gazer
Surfer's Riptide, age 14; sire: Surfer Dude; dam: Surf Queen
(by: Patty V. McMahon)Maverick, age 10; sire: Wild Thing; dam: Witchkraft
(by: Martha Van Popering)
Don Leonard Stud II (DLSII), age 9; sire Phantom Mist; dam: Tuney
WH Windy's Beach Boy, age 8; sire: WH Nightwind; dam: WH Sea Breeze
Beach Boy is a direct descendant of Misty of Chincoteague
CLG ToMorrow's Tidewater Twist, age 6; sire: Tornado's Legacy; dam: Sweetheart
Henry's Hidalgo, age 6; sire: Wild Thing; dam: Thetis
Thunderbolt, age 5; sire: Chief Golden Eagle; dam: Bling Bling
CLG Rider on the Storm, age 4; sire: Tornado's Legacy; dam: Miracle's Natural Beauty
To see photos of the dams of the foals, I highly recommend visiting the DSC Photography website at https://www.dscphotography.net/ and open their Mares/Fillies page.
DSC Photography has a much wider range of photos of the foals born this year, which were not shared publicly - they do make their living selling photographs - so if you'd like to see more photos of each foal, they are listed under the dam's name, and can be viewed at https://www.dscphotography.net/2023/2023-Foals
Also, as noted by DSC Photography on their site, if a stallion is listed as that foal's sire, there is a high probability - but no guarantee - that the named stallion is the father. This is based on notes from multiple persons who view the different herds of ponies on an almost daily basis, listing which mares are with which stallions, noting specific breedings, and general knowledge of the ponies. Sometimes multiple stallions are listed as the possible sire, and sometimes there is simply an "unknown" listing. The dams are a certainty.
Pedigrees of the ponies can be viewed at: https://chincoteaguepedigrees.com/pedigree/pedigree.pedigree.php
Below, a photo showing Prince's herd, with the last foal born, #78 (10 July), on the left in the foreground, and #3 (26 March), on the right...
I will be listing the foals in the order they were "first seen." Usually foals are born overnight, in the hours between 10 p.m. and dawn - but birth may occur at any time, as with people. I am listing their "first date seen" as date of birth, though it might not be exact. There will be their birth number, date first seen, sex, coat color, name of dam, and name of probable sire. If the foal is a descendant of Misty of Chincoteague (the pony made famous in the book written Marguerite Henry), there will be an asterisk (*) by the number. I will be placing the mare's usual "call name" first; if her registration name is different or longer, it will be in parentheses.
Later this week, or early Pony Penning Week (July 22 - 29), the Pony Committee of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company will choose fillies that will be designated as "Buy Back" ponies. The CVFC chooses these ponies because of their bloodlines, conformation, and, sometimes, coat color. They will spend their lives on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge as broodmares. "Buy Backs" are a way to buy a pony, but not have to take it home and care for, with constant feed and veterinarian bills. A person, or group of people, purchase the pony, pay the CVFC for her, have their photo taken with her, name her, and can visit the Refuge and see her and her foals for the rest of her natural life. And the purchase price of the foal is a tax write-off. Also, please note that Buy Back foals tend to cost more than the regular take home foals.
All foals sold, other than the Buy Backs, are the purchasers responsibility. Younger foals will have a later, designated, pick-up day, as they are still nursing. But older foals, such as #3 pictured above, are ready to be weaned, and have to be trailered away in an approved trailer. The days of putting a foal in the back of a station wagon or van are long gone. If you plan on purchasing a foal, check the CVFC's website at https://www.cvfc3.com/ for much more information.
I try to have a photo of the foal's face and a view of each side of the foal in my presentation photos. This year, fewer photos were available, due to where the herds hang out. Some ponies are "hiders" from people, some herds are difficult to observe close up, some of the usual areas are no longer easily accessible to the photographers... That's one of the reasons I listed the link to DSC Photography's 2023 Foals photographs page...

Auctioned for a record price of $40,500 in June. The CVFC wished to donate to the funds being raised by the Museum of Chincoteague Island for the purchase of the remaining 10 acres of the original Beebe Ranch, where Misty of Chincoteague was born. The CVFC chose a "Buy Back" filly early and she was auctioned on-line, after many announcements, with the money from the winning bid being presented to the Museum to purchase Beebe Ranch. Beebe Ranch now belongs to the Museum.
