40th Breeders Cup Finished Without Injury Today - Results, Purse Winnings and Betting Pay-Outs

No injuries or accidents were reported about the participants in today's Breeders Cup Races.  Only one injury occurred yesterday during the five 2-year-old races: an un-displaced condylar fracture/crack in the foreleg of Mountain Bear (IRE), who finished in second place in Friday's Turf race for colts.  At the end of the race, the jockey pulled up and dismounted, and the colt was taken off track in an ambulance. A series of x-rays were taken, he was placed in a cast, and the vets expect him to be able to resume training in 4 weeks.
Todays races were for horses aged 3 years and up, and the 9 Breeders Cup races today showcased 93 horses representing the breeders from 8 countries (11 countries if you count the breeding places of sires and dams).
I realize that I kept referring to descendants of Sunday Silence in my listings of runners in the races for today.   I was a big fan of Sunday Silence in 1988 and 1989, his 2 years of racing.  And I disliked Easy Goer and his trainer, Shug McGaughey.  The press loved Easy Goer and kept comparing him to Secretariat and Man o'War, and I didn't believe he deserved that comparison.  I attended the 1989 Breeders Cup, and was standing 30 feet from the finish line when Sunday Silence, under Chris McCarron, defeated Easy Goer in the Classic.  I screamed until I was hoarse; and I never turned in my betting ticket with my money on Sunday Silence to win. Sunday Silence was sold to Japan and enjoyed an excellent stud career there; but he succumbed to a heart attack due to laminitis, which had also infected one leg, at the age of  16.  A great stud career was cut short.  And I have been waiting for a grandfoal or great-grandfoal to win a Breeders Cup race.  It happened today, and his grandson is an almost exact image of Sunday Silence.

Back to this year's Breeders Cup Races... After listing a few details of each race, I will tell you the first four finishers in each race, with the distance between each.  Then I will list the pay-out for a bet of $2 in each of the following categories: the win, place and show; and the exacta, trifecta and superfecta.  Following that, I will list the complete order of finish for each race, and how much purse money each entry won.  If there were more than 10 horses entered, any horse that finished after 10th place did not earn any purse money.  Also remember these are weight-for-age races; 3-year-olds carry less weight than their elders; and if the girls race against the boys, the girls get a 3 pound weight allowance for their age.

The first Breeders Cup race of the day was the Dirt Mile, run on the main track, with a purse of $1 million.  This was open to both sexes at weight for age, but only seven males were entered.  The sentimental favorite Cody's Wish crossed the finish line first (for the second year in a row), winning by a nose in 1:35.97.  Three-year-old National Treasure, immediately behind Cody's Wish in second, was 3 and 3/4 lengths ahead of Skippylongstocking, who out-distanced fourth-place Charge It by 6 and 1/2 lengths.  Cody's Wish will retire to stud following today's race.
A $2 win ticket on Cody's Wish paid $3.60, a place bet on National Treasure paid $4.20, and a show bet on Skippylongstocking returned $4.  A $2 exact brought you $14.40; a trifecta garnered $67.40; and a superfecta paid $156.80.
