40th Breeders Cup Races on Saturday, 4 November 2023

The 40th annual Breeders Cup World Championship races will start on Friday, 3 November 2023, at Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, California.  There are five juvenile races on "Future Stars Friday" which I described in my previous blog.  There have been 4 scratches in the Juvenile races so far, and those are noted in that blog posting.
Today I'm writing about the 9 races being run Saturday, all for equines 3 years of age and older.  The races begin at 2:30 EDT (11:30 PDT), and there is television coverage on USA, Fan Duel Racing, NBC and Peacock.  Check your local listings for viewing times and availability.  The purse money in each of the 9 races varies from $1 million to $6 million.
There have been 6 scratches in Saturday's races since the post positions were drawn: in the first Breeders Cup race of the day, the Dirt Mile, there is one scratch, #7, Algiers (IRE), due to heat in his right foreleg on 1 November; the entry of #2, Practical Move, was withdrawn due to his unfortunate and untimely death.  After galloping, Practical Move was walking back to the barn area when he collapsed and died.  A necropsy is being performed, but it appeared to be a heart attack, according to those with him.  Practical Move was a 3-year-old bay colt, bred in Kentucky, by Practical Joke and out of Ack Naughty.
There is a scratch of #6, Get Smokin, in the Turf.  Get Smokin is a 6-year-old chestnut gelding bred in Kentucky, by Get Stormy and out of Hookah Lady.  The reason for the scratch is "old ankles."
In the Classic, Arcangelo, who drew post #1, was scratched due to a continuing hoof problem.  His trainer and owner had hoped the 3-year-old would recover enough to enter the race, but his hoof problem continues.
In the Turf Sprint, Bradsell, #2, has scratched today, as has the first eligible "stand-by" One Timer, #13; Beer Can Man, #14, has drawn in.
As usual, I'll make my own weird comments about the field in each race.  Three of the nine races are for the female sex only, the other six allow both sexes to compete, with the ladies receiving a 3 pound weight allowance (for example, a 3-year-old colt would carry 123 pounds, while a filly the same age would carry 120 pounds).  All of the races are weight for age, with 3-year-olds assigned a lesser weight.  In posting the entries, after the entry's name, if the entry is a female (other than in the 3 all ladies races) there will be and asterisk after the name, and an [age-weight assigned] before the morning line betting odds, sire's name, and dam's name.    (Example:  1.  Betty's Bullet* [3 -120]   20 to 1   Johan    Grace)

The 3/4 mile Sprint on the main dirt track will end this year's edition of the Breeders Cup World Championship races.  When I used to attend these races, the Sprint was the first race to start the day, and I usually won a good deal of money betting on it... This year, nine horses will vie for the $2 million purse - all males, ranging in age from 3 to 6 years.  The two geldings are Nakatomi and The Chosen Vron; a ridgling, American Theorem, is also contending with the 6 other colts.  The Chosen Vron was bred in California; Speed Boat Beach was bred in Florida; the other entries were bred in Kentucky.  American Theorem is a gray/roan; Nakatomi, The Chosen Vron, and Elite Power are chestnuts; and the rest of the field are bays.  Mike Smith will be riding Speed Boat Beach.

Well, that's it...  If there are more scratches, I will post them in the appropriate blog for the Juveniles tomorrow; or for the older thoroughbreds here.   If you bet, good luck!

Here's to a delightful 40th edition of the Breeders Cup races run without injury to equines or people!
