Fifty Chincoteague Pony Foals Born Through 6 May 2024
It looks as though the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company will have a bumper crop of foals for its' Pony Auction on Thursday, 25 July. The people who live on Chincoteague Island do not pay a tax to support their Fire Department and Ambulance Service. The purchase of fire fighting equipment, fire engines, ambulances, rescue vehicles, all training for both services, and the few paid positions in both services, come through the sales of the Chincoteague Pony foals, the annual Firemen's Carnival in July, fund-raising events and donations. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company was established in May of 1924 - 100 years ago this month - after two horrendous fires wiped out downtown areas, and then when a third fire occurred, the previously purchased fire-fighting equipment would not work. Fourteen men passed a hat around, raised $4.16, and the CVFC was formed.
My mother was a Teaguer, born and raised on the island. Her father and grandfather were contractors for the U. S. Coast Guard to care for both the Assateague Lighthouse and for the Killick Shoals Lighthouse out in Chincoteague Bay. Both were watermen, and Mom's family lived on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands tracing back to 1697. I spent my summers there while I was growing up, and was "horse crazy" like my Mom. Mom was a cousin of the Beebe kids and grandchildren through "Grandma" Ida Whealton Beebe, and used to walk from her house on Peterson Street to the Beebe Rach each Sunday afternoon in hopes of being able to do some chores and "get paid" by being allowed to ride a pony with her friend and cousin Alma Beebe. - So I grew up with huge ties to Chincoteague Ponies, and even rode Misty multiple times as a child.
*** The photos I use in this specific blog are NOT mine. They are the copyrighted, personal photographs of the person - or company - that took each one. They are being used here for illustrative purposes only. I make no money from my blogs. If I know who took the photo, I label it. If I use your photo without labeling it, please notify me so I can correctly attribute your photo. I took unidentified photos from the internet, and I don't know who they "belong" to. My apologies to the owners. I believe that most of the photos were taken by DSC Photography; but I am not sure. ***
Anyway, I'm posting photos of the stallions on Assateague, so you can see their markings and conformation, followed by photos of the foals that have been born so far this foaling season. As of yesterday evening, Monday, 6 May, 50 foals have been reported.
I am posting my personal favorite photo of each stallion. I will list their nickname first, then their registered name, when they were born, and their sire and dam. *** Please note - I do not know who took the photos of the stallions, unless it is noted. If this is your photo, please let me know, so that I can give you the wonderful credit that is due you. My apologies for not knowing who these photos were taken by. ***

First 50 Foals of 2024:
** No guarantee that the sire listed is the actual sire. Sire names listed are based on whose herd the mare was in 11 months previous to birth, and viewed breedings. Some mares bounce back and forth between several herds. Some mares stay with one stallion, unless separated for a reason (medical issues can remove a mare or stallion from their usual partners). DNA testing is not done. **
The majority of these photos are the work of DSC Photography - Darcy and Steve Cole are "Johnny-on-the-spot" in most of the foal sightings. If I do not note under the photo that it was taken by another person or company, then you know that the photo is copyrighted by DSC Photography. - I have cropped most of the photos because I want to focus on the foals, and not be distracted by the glorious scenery of Assateague Island.
The foals are numbered by the order in which they were first seen. The date they were seen might - or might not - be the actual date of birth. A few of the mares were seen in labor, and those foals were definitely born on those dates; some are obviously newborns, small, damp, and bumbling; and sometimes bad weather keeps the photographers away from the trails. - Not all photos shown are of newly born babies. A few foals were born 6 weeks ago, and if I have a good recent photo available for use, I use it. All descendants of Misty of Chincoteague are marked with an asterisk (*) before the number.
I try to post a view of the foal's face, and a view of both sides; if the foal is a pinto, I also try to post a "butt view" if it's available. Sometimes, even if a photographer waits for hours, they can't get views from all sides. It's what happens when one deals with wild (or feral) animals, and the photographer has to stay either on a boat, or on a trail.

12. Chestnut colt 10 April Sire: Chief Dam: CLG Ember
13. Bay pinto colt 12 April Sire: Hidalgo Dam: Rosie's Teapot
Note: Foals 13 & 14 have the same sire, and so , are half-brothers. The dam of foal 14, Molly's Rosebud, is also the dam of foal 13, Rosie's Teapot. So foal 13 is the nephew of foal 14; and foal 14 is the uncle of foal 13 - and the foals were seen on the same day, in the same herd. Who was born first?

To view photos of all of the ponies belonging to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, I highly recommend you visit Darcy & Steve Cole's DSC Photography website. It may be viewed at: https://www.dscphotography.net/
To look at pedigrees for all equines living on Assateague Island, both in Maryland on the Assateague National Seashore, and in Virginia on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, I also recommend visiting: https://chincoteaguepedigrees.com/pedigree/pedigree.pedigree.php This site allows you to view current (and deceased) ponies; there is a choice for Maryland or Virginia ponies, and besides offering pedigrees, it will also direct you to links where photos of the ponies (if available) can be seen.
I'll be posting more photos and information regarding new foals on the CNWR after we reach 75...
