Dornoch Wins 2024 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga
Dornoch became the third winner of a Triple Crown race in 2024, while racing the winners of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. The third leg of the 2024 was run at Saratoga this year due to rebuilding at Belmont Park, and the Belmont Stakes was shortened from the traditional 1 and 1/2 miles down to 1 and 1/4 miles - the same length as the Kentucky Derby. The purse for the race was a cool $2 million.
Surprisingly, the second-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, Sierra Leone, was the betting favorite in the field of ten colts. Unfortunately, Sierra Leone stumbled coming out of the starting gate, and then was bumped hard when he caught up with the back of the field. Seize the Grey, winner of the Preakness, took the early lead and ran the quarter in 22.99 seconds, the half in 47.25 seconds, and the 3/4 in 1:10.67. That's when Dornach, who had been in second place following the gray colt for the first 6 furlongs, started to move up. Dornoch took the lead at the mile marker (in a time of 1:35.51), but Mindframe, who had only run in 2 previous races, was charging forward. Mindframe took the lead with 1/8 mile left to run; but his greenness showed, as he veered toward the outside rail, and apparently ran out of gas. Meanwhile, Sierra Leone had been picking off the colts in front of him, and was steadily gaining.
Dornach rallied and regained the lead, as Mindframe ran back to the second path from the inner rail. Dornach hung on to win the Belmont Stakes in a time of 2.01.64; he finished a half length ahead of Mindframe; who was one length ahead of Sierra Leone; who was 4 lengths in front of Honor Marie. This is the complete order of finish, with purse earnings: 1. Dornach ($1,200,000); 2. Mindframe ($360,000); 3. Sierra Leone ($200,000); 4. Honor Marie ($100,000); 5. Antiquarian ($60,000); 6. Protective ($40,000); 7. Seize the Grey ($20,000); 8. Mystik Dan ($20,000); 9. The Wine Steward; 10. Resilience.
The payouts for a $2 bet were: a win ticket for Dornoch paid $37.40; a place bet for Mindframe returned $6.80; and a show ticket for Sierra Leone gave you $2.60. The $2 exacta paid $326.50; the trifecta gave you $946; and the superfecta returned $6,401.
