Nine Breeders' Cup Races From Del Mar on Saturday, 2 November 2024
The horses that participate in the Breeders' Cup races each year are at the top of their games; they have to be nominated, and they have to earn points to qualify to enter such high profile races. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) became law after being passed by Congress in 2020. HISA was created to implement, for the first time, a national, uniform set of integrity and safety rules that are applied consistently to every Thoroughbred racing participant and racetrack facility throughout the United States and it's territories. All horses, trainers and staff members that participate in the Breeders' Cup conform with HISA rules.
Rigorous veterinary checks are carried out on each horse that runs in a Breeders' Cup race. Nine races were run Saturday at Del Mar in California. Prior to the races, one horse in the Fillies and Mares Sprint was scratched by the trainer; in the Distaff, 3 of the ladies were scratched by the veterinarians; in the Fillies and Mares Turf race, one entry was scratched by the veterinarian; in the Turf Mile race, 2 three-year-olds (a filly and a colt) were scratched by their trainers; and in the Dirt Mile, one horse was scratched by the veterinarian. So... trainers who were not satisfied with their charges scratched 3 entries; and the veterinarians scratched 5 entries who could not pass the vet checks.
There was a veterinarian scratch at the beginning of the Turf Sprint today, also. The horses had loaded into the starting gate, when Believing, a 4-year-old Irish-bred filly, flipped over backwards in the gate and became wedged in the gate. Her jockey, Ryan Moore, flipped backwards out of the gate, himself, to avoid being crushed by the filly. The race was delayed; the other 11 horses in the race were unloaded from the gate, while several assistant starters and gatemen, overseen by the veterinarian at the starting gate, made sure she was able to rise and stand on her own. The vet decided to scratch her, and had her returned to her barn for observation. The jockey was checked for concussion, and cleared to ride in later races. Once the eleven entries were re-loaded into the starting gate, the race was run. The race announcers discussed the filly's misbehavior in the gate, and offered the thoughts that this was the first time she was in the starting gate wearing blinkers (she had a workout wearing them earlier in the week, but was not schooled in the starting gate with them on), and that in Europe, where she has always raced before, there was never a starter's assistant standing on the ledge inside the starting gate with her. It was offered that with the blinkers-caused "blindness," and with the feeling of a human's presence hovering over her head, which she is not used to, caused her a momentary panic attack, which made her rear up and flip backward.

There was also a tragic death at the end of the Turf race Saturday. An international star-studded field of 13 horses, ranging in age from 3 to 6 years contested for the championship over the 1 and 1/2 miles. Jayarebe, a 3-year-old bay colt who was bred in France, finished in 7th place. As he was "galloping out," slowing down gradually past the finish line, he suddenly collapsed. According to one of the veterinarians, Dr. Al Ruggles, the colt was unconscious when the first veterinarian arrived at his side. The equine ambulance was already pulling up beside the colt; using a slide, Jayarebe was placed inside the ambulance, and immediate transport to the medical stall began. Unfortunately, the colt passed away after arrival in the barn area's medical stall, while receiving medical aid. It is thought that the colt "suffered a cardiac event," which killed him. (As he was insured, a necroscopy will be performed to ascertain the cause of death.)

The first Championship race Saturday was the Breeders' Cup Fillies and Mares Sprint, run at a distance of 7 furlongs (7/8 mile), with a $1 million purse. There were 9 entries, and the three 3-year-old fillies carried 122 pounds, while the older ladies carried 124 pounds. The 3-year-olds were: Frost At Dawn, One Magic Philly, and Ways and Means.
Soul of an Angel crossed the finish line in 1:21.59, a half-length ahead of Society. Society was a nose in front of Pleasant, who was leading Scylla by a half-length.
The full order of finish and the amount of purse winnings were as follows: First: Soul of an Angel, $520,000; second: Society, $170,000; third: Pleasant, $90,000; fourth: Scylla, $50,000; fifth: Ways and Means, $30,000; sixth: One Magic Philly, $20,000; seventh: Zeitlos, $10,000; eighth: Vahva, $10,000; ninth: Frost At Dawn, $10,000.
As always, I list betting payouts for a straight $2 bet... A $2 win bet on Soul of an Angel paid $41.60; a place ticket on Society returned $5.80; and a show bet on Pleasant put $8.20 in your pocket. The exacta paid out $212.80; the trifecta returned $2,887.20; and the superfecta was a $15,554.60 payout.

After Believing flipped in the starting gate, and was scratched, the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint was contested by 11 entries. The horses carried weights according to their sex and age; I'll list the weight carried in the full order of finish. The race covered 5/8 mile (5 furlongs) and had a guaranteed purse of $1 million. Two fillies (Ag Bullet abd Star of Mystery) and two geldings (Motorius and Isivunguvungu) were in the race.
Starlust (GB) won the race in 55.92 seconds, and was a neck ahead of Motorius (GB). Motorius (GB) was a nose in front of Ag Bullet, who was leading Star of Mystery (GB) by 3/4 length. There was an inquiry, lodged by the jockey of Isivunguvungu (SAF), which was dismissed. Cogburn, who had been leading the field, drifted out from the rail, and bumped into Starlust (GB), who was pushed into Isisvunguvungu (SAF). As the South African-bred colt was already falling back from the leaders, the stewards decided the bump did not affect the finish of the race.
The full order of finish, weight carried [in brackets] and the amount of purse winnings were as follows: First: Starlust (GB) [124], $520,000; second: Motorius (GB) [126], $170,000; third: Ag Bullet [123], $90,000; fourth: Star of Mystery (GB) [121], $50,000; fifth: Cogburn [126], $30,000; sixth: Arzak [126], $20,000; seventh: Isivunguvungu (SAF) [126], $10,000; eighth: Big Evs (IRE) [124], $10,000; ninth: Howard Wolowitz [124], $10,000; tenth: Big Invasion [126], $10,000; eleventh: Bradsell (GB) [126].
A $2 win ticket on Starlust (GB) paid $69.20; a place bet on Motorius (GB) returned $11.00; and a correct show ticket on Ag Bullet gave you $6.80. The exacta returned $696.60; the trifecta put $6,493.20 in your pocket; and the superfecta paid $34,425.80.
