Chincoteague Pony Foals of 2022 Born Through 19 June
Here are photos of the foals born on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island, Virginia. The foals are owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, and are sold each year to fund the CVFC year-round, at the annual Pony Auction, taking place this year on Thursday, 28 July. All ponies, and especially the foals, are checked by veterinarians prior to the sale. Foals too young to be weaned are sold, but kept with their mothers until the October Fall Round-Up, at which time the foals will be released to their owners. - Usually 10 foals are deemed as a "Buy Back" each year. I believe that this year they will all be fillies, as there are a few younger stallions roaming about. One of the older stallions has bred his ladies, but not produced any foals for several years.
The CVFC Pony Committee decides which foals will be designated as a "Buy Back," looking at the bloodlines currently on the island, as well as the age of the mares and stallions. They also look at conformation and coat color, in making their choices. A Buy Back is sold to the owner, or group of owners, who, essentially, make a large donation to the CVFC. The owner is allowed to name the foal, and have their photo taken with it, but the foal stays on the islands, and produces more offspring for the CVFC to sell as they become adults. Prices for Buy Backs have gone up in the past years. Last year, the least expensive Buy Back sold for $10,600; the most costly was $25,500. The least expensive take-home foal was $2,400, and the highest bid was $9,300.
Since my focus here is on the foal itself, I have cropped photos openly shared on Facebook. I will identify the person who took the photo, and/or the person who owns the copyright to that photo.
Most of the photos were taken by Darcy and Steve Cole of DSC Photography; you may see a partial copyright mark on a few of their cropped photos. Their copyright mark is: ©http://dscphotography.net If there is no listing of a specific photographer, it is the property of DSC Photography.
There are several photos taken by Nicole Menta - her photos will be identified with her name.
There are a few photos taken by Ken King; his mark is ©Ken King . They will be identified
There are 5 other photos taken by other people or companies; they are each identified.
None of these photographs belong to me - they are the property of other people or companies. Do not re-use or try to sell any of these photos!!
One more note - these are feral horses they are not fed grain and hay on a daily basis. Producing milk for a foal takes up a lot of calories that a mare would usually spend on herself - a few of the mares look gaunt. They are being monitored for both their own and the baby's sake. If the vet deems it necessary, they will be taken to the Carnival Grounds (along with the foal) to receive supplemental feed and care. From napping in the grass and on muddy areas, some of the foals are very dirty and/or wet. Someone looked at a photo of a foal who had napped on a wet area, producing darker wet spots on it's coat, and announced that she hoped it would keep it's "usual coat coloring" for the rest of it's life...
Also, many of these ponies are far off the trails, away from humans, and stay that way most of the year. Photos of foals from these herds are difficult to get, and are greatly enlarged, due to distance. And, lastly, foals 50 through 54 are being shown in photos where they are less than 48 hours old. They look gawky and unsure of their footing, and very skinny.
So - the foals - numbered in order first seen, with coat color, sex, date of first sighting (usually birthdate), sire and dam. If the pony is known by a shortening of their registered name, I will put that first with their registered name in parentheses. Since the stallions will be named repeatedly, I'll only type out their registered name once.
