Chincoteague Pony Auction (and Raffle) Raises Over $459,000 for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company
Well, the 97th Annual Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company's Pony Penning Auction is in the record books - and it did set some records! First, at least 8,000 raffle tickets for King Neptune were sold before Wednesday night's drawing, at $1 apiece; and Debra Hughes was the very lucky winner, taking home a bay pinto colt, born 27 April. He was sired by Tornado's Legacy, and out of the dam Tawny Treasure, foal 19 this year.
There were 14 donated items of art, handicrafts, and other items given to the CVFC to help raise funds for equipment, training, a few full-time employees, and pony care. These works of art, crocheted items, and antiques brought in $8,650.
** Maureen Beebe's personal Steuben saddle was auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Maureen Beebe Hursh Scholarship Fund for students for Chincoteague High School. Her saddle brought a high bid of $7,400. **
There have been 67 foals born this year to the CVFC herds; unfortunately, we lost two - foal 18 passed away as a suckling; foal 58 passed away this month. With foal 19 as King Neptune, that left 64 foals for sale - and I do not have the purchase price of one - the final foal born so far, 67. You will find out her story at the bottom of this blog...
The total amount of money raised from the auction of 63 foals was $442,800, plus at least $8,000 from the sale of King Neptune raffle tickets, plus the $8,650 from donated lots A through O... Those totals equal $459,450. This is the highest total in the history of the CVFC Pony Penning Auction.
I was surprised that the CVFC and the auctioneer did not mention that 7 of the foals auctioned were Misty of Chincoteague descendants. It was mentioned regarding 2 of those foals, and, afterwards, the bidding went much higher. - Not that I want to sucker people into bidding higher (even though that means more funds for the CVFC); I just think some people would be willing to pay a bit more for a descendant of Misty. (I know I would.)
The lowest price paid for a foal this year was $2,500 for a chestnut pinto colt, a grandson of Surfer Dude, out of his daughter Surfin' Chantel. The highest price was for a Buy Back filly, $32,000, purchased by the Chincoteague Legacy Group. This filly is a black pinto, descended from Misty through her sire, Beach Boy.
My blog listing the foals for sale has 2 to 4 photos of each foal. For this auction sale blog, I'll only use 1 photo of each pony... They will be listed by number, amount of highest bid, filly or colt, sire and dam. Buy Backs will have a **BB before their number, and if the foal is a Misty descendant, a (*M) denoting either sire or dam.

Read comment from the CVFC Facebook page below for an explanation...
From the CVFC: "The Pony Committee Chairman asked me to share this with you:Foal #67
Bottom line is we had a serious miscommunication. On a earlier foal, we had two people come up and pay for the same foal. The one buyer agreed to let the family with the little kids have the foal and in return we let her have #67. So everyone is happy, kids are happy, buyers are happy, we are happy, whole world is happy!
Hey, after two years and trying something new, if this one miscommunication is the only thing that happened then it was a good day!! Thanks for understanding!"
So... We/I don't know which foal the double bid was on. Was it a buckskin pinto like 67? We don't know... So the amount taken is is a little fluid...
